This really ticks off Venus, who has a track record of causing problems if anyone is considered more beautiful than her (see the Trojan War). As beautiful as she is, her admirers worship her rather than Venus, who is actually a goddess. Psyche is the youngest and most beautiful of three daughters of a king and queen of an unnamed city.
Originating in Apuleius’s Metamorphoses, it takes up about a fifth of the story’s length. Literally seen as the union between “sexual desire” and the “soul,” Cupid and Psyche’s love had to overcome many obstacles. The most famous story of Cupid is probably his marriage to Psyche. Sometimes, he uses both arrows to create conflict, such as by making the god Apollo desire the nymph Daphne, who wanted nothing to do with him. The golden arrows are for desire, with lead tipped arrows for aversion. Famously armed with a golden bow and two kinds of arrows, Cupid decides when someone is struck with uncontrollable desire and when someone feels an overwhelming aversion to another. From birth, Cupid sported a pair of wings attached to his back, allowing him to fly, signifying the “flighty” nature of lovers.
